Disability Mentoring Day at OZ
Disability Mentoring Day is a nationwide effort to promote career development for students with disabilities through hands-on career exploration. The Office of Zoning (OZ) is pleased to announce that it participated in Disability Mentoring Day by hosting a young man named Devante Little. Devante is an amiable 11th grade student attending the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute located in Northeast Washington, D.C.
On October 25, 2011, Devante, accompanied by his teacher Mr. Huff visited the OZ. Devante, guided by Esther Bushman, General Counsel, had an opportunity to spend time in the OZ public reading room to learn about zoning and to explore our interactive GIS map and other electronically available documents on the OZ web site. He also attended a public hearing session of the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) where he watched the BZA hear and deliberate on several cases. Devante particularly enjoyed observing Erin Clark, Clerical Assistant, while she was at work in the Tech Center producing the live video streaming during the BZA session. Finally, Devante spent some quality time at the front desk observing OZ's front line customer service delivery. Devante was given a gift of the Zoning Guidebook and a copy of the D.C. Zoning Map as a memento of his visit. OZ received the priceless gift of making a new friend in Devante.
